Description
In this fresco in the Chapel of Saint Martin at Assisi, Simone Martini depicts the saint celebrating Mass and raising the consecrated host. According to the traditional account, Martin had given his tunic to a poor man, and angels came to cover his arms during the liturgy.
The miracle unfolds within a church of elegant vaults. An attendant looks on in astonishment, while the altar, open book and liturgical vessels underline the solemnity of the ceremony. The scene is part of the fresco cycle devoted to Martin’s life.
Charity is again the starting point of the story: Martin has given clothing to someone in need and finds himself inadequately dressed during Mass. The angels respond by protecting him. The contrast between the bishop’s concentration and an astonished attendant makes the marvel understandable through ordinary human reactions, in a meticulously arranged church interior.
