Description
Duccio's Annunciation shows the archangel Gabriel entering Mary's home to tell her that she will become the mother of Jesus. The Virgin has stopped reading a book open at Isaiah's prophecy, while a small white dove, signifying the Holy Spirit, approaches her. Lilies evoke her purity, and the delicate architecture of arches and columns brings the sacred encounter into a recognizable human setting.
This small panel opened the front predella of the Maestà made for Siena Cathedral. Painted around 1308–1311, it was later separated from the altarpiece and entered London's National Gallery in 1883. Physical traces of its original setting survive in the wood. A pink wall, grey columns and a sequence of rounded and pointed arches establish a setting that feels both domestic and ceremonial.
