Description
Caravaggio represents the encounter between the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary through an exceptionally austere composition. The angel descends from the upper left, suspended above Mary and extending his arm towards her, while the Virgin kneels below and receives the announcement with restrained humility. The scene contains almost no architectural or secondary narrative elements; darkness dominates the space and the figures are constructed through highly selective illumination.
The painting belongs to the final years of Caravaggio's career and demonstrates the progressive simplification of his pictorial language. In contrast to the descriptive richness of many traditional Annunciations, Caravaggio reduces the episode to the gestural dialogue between the two figures. The elevated and dynamic position of the angel contrasts with Mary's withdrawn attitude, establishing a powerful diagonal movement.
