Description
Saint Simon is shown from the waist up, wearing a green mantle and holding a pale blue book between his hands. His bearded face turns slightly to the side, while the gold background and richly patterned halo establish his sacred status. A painted medieval inscription names him.
Executed in tempera around 1315–1320, the small panel belonged to a set of ten apostles, probably from the predella of an altarpiece by Simone Martini. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
The sideways glance establishes a relationship with something now outside the surviving panel. Simon seems attentive to a neighbouring figure, a possibility consistent with his place in a series. There is no need to invent a specific conversation or reconstruct the lost order to appreciate the effect.
