Description
Saint Martin, still a Roman soldier, tells Emperor Julian that he will lay down his weapons and devote himself to Christ. The imperial camp appears on the left, while enemy forces wait beyond the hills on the right. Holding a small cross, Martin moves forward, ready, according to his legend, to face the impending battle unarmed.
This fresco by Simone Martini is the fourth scene in the Chapel of Saint Martin cycle in the Lower Basilica of Saint Francis at Assisi. The artist combines religious solemnity with striking observation of soldiers, costume, tents and human gestures.
The small cross held by Martin stands out among the weapons and signals his changed allegiance. The opposing camps place him visually between two worlds. This fresco marks a turning point in the cycle: the military honour celebrated in the preceding ceremony gives way to the religious commitment that will shape Martin’s later life and work as a bishop.
