Description
Saint John the Evangelist is a small panel from a now-dismembered polyptych and forms a pendant to the Saint Lawrence preserved in the same museum at Chaalis. The saint is shown half-length against a gold ground, with a grave and monumental presence characteristic of Giotto's mature style. John holds a scroll inscribed with the words 'Ego sum via, veritas et vita', reinforcing his identity as witness and transmitter of Christ's word. The inscription also introduces a verbal element into an image otherwise dominated by the saint's concentrated stillness.
The face is modeled through subtle transitions of light and shadow that give volume to the forehead, cheeks and beard. Although the precise arrangement remains debated, the stylistic coherence strongly suggests a common workshop project.
