Description
This scene belongs to the great Passion cycle painted by Pietro Lorenzetti in the left transept of the Lower Basilica of Saint Francis at Assisi. Christ hangs on the cross between the two thieves, set against a deep blue sky and surrounded by angels moving in grief. Beneath the crosses, a dense crowd of soldiers, horsemen, disciples and holy women turns Calvary into a place of intense human emotion.
The fresco stands out for its dramatic power and for the range of reactions shown around Christ’s death. Some sections were lost over time and now appear as large pale lacunae, yet the composition still retains remarkable force. The painting shows Lorenzetti’s ability to unite monumentality, narrative feeling and careful observation of gesture in one of the great frescoes of the Trecento.
