Description
The Virgin appears elevated with the Christ Child beneath a large red curtain dominating the upper part of the composition. Below them, Saint Dominic distributes rosaries to a group of worshippers who crowd forward and extend their hands to receive them, while Saint Peter Martyr points towards the Virgin and Child as the source of the grace being bestowed.
At the left, the donor directs his gaze and gesture towards the viewer, establishing a connection between the painted space and those contemplating the altarpiece. Caravaggio transforms a complex devotional scene into a monumental composition structured through gestures, gazes and powerful contrasts of illumination.
The raised hands of the worshippers create a striking visual rhythm leading towards Saint Dominic and from him to the Virgin and Child.
