Description
The Madonna of Loreto , painted around 1604–1605 for the Cavalletti Chapel in Sant'Agostino in Rome, depicts the Virgin Mary and Child appearing before two kneeling pilgrims. Caravaggio places the sacred apparition at the threshold of an ordinary dwelling. Mary stands holding the Child and bends slightly towards the pilgrims, who contemplate the holy figures with their hands joined in prayer. The painter emphasizes the humble condition of the pilgrims.
Their worn clothing and bare, dirty feet are represented without idealization, creating a striking contrast with the monumental presence of the Virgin. The absence of overt supernatural elements transforms the apparition into an immediate encounter between the sacred and everyday reality. Devotion to Our Lady of Loreto was bound to a pilgrimage tradition centred on the Holy House and the idea of Mary's compassionate nearness.
