Description
Venerated as the Madonna delle Grazie in Castiglione d’Orcia, this Madonna and Child belongs to Pietro Lorenzetti’s early period. Mary supports the young Jesus, who raises his face towards her and catches the edge of her mantle. Their silent exchange lends human intimacy to a sacred image. Incised haloes, delicate outlines and a metallic ground reflect Sienese traditions, while the figures gain weight and expressive presence. The panel remains in the church of Santi Stefano e Degna, where it retains an important place in local devotion.
The painting communicates affection without turning the sacred subject into an ordinary domestic anecdote. Mary looks outward, while the Child seeks her face; their gazes do not coincide, but complement one another. The result establishes a dialogue between the worshipper and the two figures. A solemn image thus invites an immediate emotional response.
