Description
Duccio depicts Christ healing the man born blind. The episode unfolds before a lucid urban backdrop while the disciples watch the action. Once part of the reverse predella of the Maestà in Siena, the scene shows the painter’s interest in narrative, gesture and spatial organisation.
At the right a second figure of the blind man appears apart from the main group, a narrative device that suggests the unfolding of the episode within a single image. Duccio sets the scene before a compact cluster of pale buildings punctuated by dark openings, creating a simplified yet convincing urban environment. The architecture is not a passive backdrop: it structures the space, guides the action and establishes a dialogue between the main group and the isolated figure on the far right.
