Description
Christ appears crowned with thorns and partially wrapped in an intense red cloak, positioned between two figures involved in presenting him to the people following the scourging. Pontius Pilate occupies the foreground and leans outward from the picture, indicating Christ as though directly addressing the crowd. Behind the prisoner, an attendant holds and arranges the cloak over his shoulders.
The three figures overlap within an exceptionally restricted space, creating a compact composition in which architectural references and the distance between the represented event and the spectator almost completely disappear. Light falls upon Christ's torso and face and emphasizes the vivid red of the cloak against the predominantly dark tones of the composition. Rediscovered in Madrid in 2021, the painting was later displayed at the Prado following technical investigation and conservation that supported its attribution.
