Description
The scene depicts the moment when Christ, after being scourged and crowned with thorns, is presented before the people. The composition is concentrated upon three figures emerging from an almost completely black background. Christ occupies the centre, his torso exposed and partially covered by a cloak, while an attendant positioned behind him holds or arranges the fabric around his body.
To the right stands Pontius Pilate, who turns outward as though addressing those looking at the painting. This device implicitly places the spectator among the crowd before whom Christ is being displayed. The illumination selects only the essential elements of the narrative: Christ's wounded body, the crown of thorns, the hands and the faces. The arrangement of light, gestures and objects rewards careful looking without imposing a single definitive interpretation.
