Description
The Bologna Polyptych is one of the most important signed works from Giotto's late career and a key document for the spread of his pictorial language in northern Italy. The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna dates it to around 1330 and attributes its execution to Giotto and his workshop, probably working in Florence for a prestigious commission connected with the lost Apostolic Palace in Bologna. The ensemble is centered on the enthroned Virgin and Child. Mary appears monumental and stable, seated on a light-colored marble throne whose construction creates a convincing sense of depth.
The Child introduces movement and affection by touching his mother's chin, clutching her neckline and kicking his feet. The signature matters particularly on an altarpiece whose production required different kinds of expertise.
