Description
The Badia Polyptych is one of the fundamental works of Giotto's panel painting and an important record of his Florentine activity in the opening years of the fourteenth century. Originally made for the Badia Fiorentina, the altarpiece consists of five pointed compartments. The Virgin and Child occupy the central panel, while Saints Nicholas of Bari, John the Evangelist, Peter and Benedict appear at the sides.
The overall structure remains rooted in the medieval polyptych tradition, yet the treatment of the figures introduces a new physical density and a more immediate relationship with the viewer. The Virgin forms the visual center of the ensemble. She is not conceived as a purely frontal or abstract icon but as a solid body beneath the mantle, linked to the Child through a more natural emotional relationship.
