Description
The Assumption of the Virgin forms part of the great Marian cycle in the apse of the Upper Basilica at Assisi and is among the most ambitious compositions within the program directed by Cimabue. It belongs to a sequence devoted to the death and glorification of Mary, culminating in her heavenly presence beside Christ. The scene is structured in superimposed levels.
At the bottom appears the sarcophagus associated with Mary's death and the Apostles gathered around it. Above them, ordered ranks of saints provide a transition from the earthly to the celestial realm. The visual climax occurs above, where Christ and Mary appear within a mandorla supported by angels. Mary's head inclines toward Christ, combining the theme of her Assumption with the symbolism of heavenly union.
