Description
The Annunciation in the Scrovegni Chapel occupies an exceptional position within Giotto's decorative programme because it is not contained within a single rectangular field. Instead, Gabriel and the Virgin appear in two separate compartments on either side of the real triumphal arch, each kneeling within painted architectural structures that visually extend the chapel itself. The physical distance between them becomes part of the narrative, turning the building's architecture into a vehicle for the angelic message.
Gabriel bends forward reverently toward Mary, while the Virgin responds from the opposite side in an equally restrained kneeling posture. Giotto avoids theatrical gestures and constructs the encounter through posture, gaze and directional movement. Balconies, cornices and receding planes in the two painted structures are aligned so that they appear to continue the triumphal arch.
